“The Red Pirate”

It was a cold, overcast day. The sky sagged under the weight of gray clouds, and a fine mist blurred the edges of the structure. Then, through the haze, its sign flickered into view: The Red Pirate. The letters, half-swallowed by mist, glowed faintly crimson, their luster dulled by age and salt air. Its façade was worn, paint peeling like the bark of an old tree, but in that moment, it looked like salvation.

I pushed the door open. A bell jingled, soft and nostalgic, and warmth hit me like a memory. Inside, the wood was dark and rich, the walls adorned with relics of the sea: brass compasses, chipped oars, nets with stories trapped in them. And in the center, like a shrine, hung the Red Pirate.

Locals said she was real. That the restaurant was named for her, and that on certain nights when the wind howled just right, her footsteps echoed upstairs. I didn’t know what to believe. I just knew the food was hot, the seat by the hearth was open, and the painting watched silently as if guarding every soul who wandered in from the cold.
