Shaded Steambed

A towering oak tree stands with quiet grandeur along a winding country lane, its broad limbs arching protectively over the path. Nestled near a shaded streambed, the tree’s gnarled roots reach into the cool earth, whispering of centuries past. Dappled light filters through its dense canopy, casting a mosaic of shadows that dance across the ground and glimmer on the gentle current below.

Rendered in pastel, “Shaded Steambed” captures this tranquil scene with masterful delicacy. The artist’s hand breathes life into soft strokes and layered hues—mossy greens, warm browns, and the silvery blue of shade—creating a sense of atmosphere that feels both intimate and timeless. Each shadow is not just cast but painted with intention, as if the very soul of the oak has spilled onto the canvas. It is a portrait of nature at rest, rich with depth, memory, and stillness.

Katie Dobson Cundiff

Katie Dobson-Cundiff is an internationally-acclaimed artist. Her work is diverse and includes many subjects, but it is her colorful and boldly painted landscape paintings that have won her worldwide attention. Completed alla prima or en plein air, her paintings expertly convey a sense of place, light, and atmosphere. Recognized as one of the Southeast’s finest impressionists, Dobson-Cundiff has served as President of the prestigious Plein Air Painters of the Southeast.

She has won numerous awards including two Silver Medals in the 2023 National and Eastern Regional Juried Exhibitions for Oil Painters of America (OPA). Dobson-Cundiff is a Signature Member of OPA, the American Impressionist Society (AIS) and American Women Artists (AWS). She is also a member of Salmagundi Club, NYC, Laguna Plein Air Painters Association (LPAPA), and California Art Club.

Having served as a faculty member for Ringling College of Art and Design from 2010 – 2023, she now offers workshops and open studio sessions in her Sarasota, Florida studio.

Katie enjoys all things to do with art, but has a passion for drawing and painting. She draws and paints almost exclusively from life – finding ordinary people, places and objects the most exciting subjects to paint. She was very fortunate to have a father who was a successful illustrator teach her the basics of how to draw and paint, and share his knowledge and love of the fine arts with her. She finds it important and fulfilling to also share this knowledge and everything she’s learned throughout her artistic journey, as well as her art, with others.

Her art is showcased at Gallery on Park, Palm Ave Fine Art, Coconut Grove Gallery, and MPDesigns Fine Art Gallery. Her studio is located at 2270 72nd Avenue East, Sarasota, Florida 34243, and is open by appointment if you’d like to see her work.
